Meet Our Athletes: Owen Williams

Owen Williams is a name to watch in the rugby scene. A dedicated athlete from Lockview High School, he has already built a reputation for his electrifying play and relentless drive. His journey in the sport has been marked by both personal growth and unforgettable team moments, setting him apart as a dynamic competitor on and off the field.

One of Owen’s most cherished rugby memories is winning the U15 Atlantics, a moment made even sweeter by the team’s journey to get there. “We were the underdogs and lost every game the year before,” he recalls. That underdog mentality fueled his determination, and he carried that same fighting spirit into his U17 season, where he scored the game-winning try in the finals during his first year.

Owen thrives in an environment where teammates push each other to be better. Two teammates, Ashton and Riley, have played a crucial role in his development. “Ashton pushes me to be faster, and Riley pushes me to work harder in the gym,” he shares. That combination of speed and strength has helped shape Owen into the player he is today.

If he could play a match anywhere in the world, Owen wouldn’t hesitate—New Zealand is at the top of his list. Known for its deep-rooted rugby culture, world-class competition, and passionate fans, it’s the ultimate stage for any player. “Why? It’s New Zealand,” he puts it simply, recognizing the country’s unmatched influence in the sport.

Beyond the physical demands of the game, rugby has taught Owen valuable leadership skills that extend beyond the field. Whether it’s guiding teammates, staying composed under pressure, or leading by example, he understands that being a great player isn’t just about performance—it’s about lifting those around him as well.

Owen is also part of the High-Performance U18 training group with Rugby Nova Scotia, where he continues to develop his skills alongside some of the province’s top young athletes.

When it comes to preparing for a big game, Owen keeps it simple. “Calm down and make sure I eat. I don’t like complex routines—it stresses me out more.” That level-headed approach allows him to focus on the game without overcomplicating things.

Describing his playing style in three words, Owen chooses: “Electric, creative, annoying.” His ability to disrupt opponents, think outside the box, and bring energy to the field makes him a formidable presence.

With a passion for rugby, a hunger to improve, and a mindset built for competition, Owen Williams is poised to make an impact wherever he plays next. His journey is just beginning, and there’s no doubt that he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the rugby world.

Meet Our Athletes: Gabby Shaw

Gabby Shaw is no stranger to hard work and high-level competition. A dedicated athlete from King’s-Edgehill, she is currently training with the Keltics High-Performance Program and has earned a spot on the long list for the Canada Games Women’s Team. Her journey in rugby has been shaped by both personal growth and strong team connections, making her a standout player on and off the field.

One of Gabby’s proudest moments came when her team won the U17 Atlantics. “We had the same team since U16, so we really got to see how well we developed,” she shares. That experience reinforced her belief in the power of teamwork—something she carries into every game she plays.

Pushing her limits is part of Gabby’s mindset, and she credits Sierra, a teammate from her school team, for challenging her to improve. “She’s a prop, so a completely different position, but she pushes me to develop my tackling skills on forwards. And she’s super positive and passionate about rugby!” Gabby thrives in an environment where athletes lift each other up and inspire growth.

If she could choose anywhere in the world to play, New Zealand would be the dream destination. “It’s warm, and Portia Woodman is from there!” she says, highlighting her admiration for one of rugby’s most electrifying players.

When game time approaches, Gabby has a unique way of getting in the zone. “I just calm my mind and watch some professional games to inspire me or look for cool things to try out,” she explains. That analytical approach, combined with her aggressive, fast-paced, and dynamic style of play, makes her a powerful presence on the field.

With her relentless drive and passion for the game, Gabby is set to make waves in the rugby world. As she continues to develop her skills and embrace new challenges, the future looks bright for this rising star.

Keltics U18 Women’s Sevens Squad Named for Vancouver Sevens Invitational

The Keltics U18 Women’s Sevens team is gearing up for its first away tournament at the Vancouver Sevens Invitational, taking place on February 20-21 at the University of British Columbia. This squad boasts a mix of speed, strength, and rugby knowledge, with the coaching staff working to find the best combinations for success. “We have lots of talented athletes, and we’re focused on finding the right balance,” said DeLory. “We are confident in the diversity of skills within the team.”

The team has been preparing for the Vancouver Sevens Invitational with bi-weekly training sessions. Most recently, the squad faced off against athletes from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island in late December, gaining valuable experience before the tournament.
